Object pronoun

The seven basic pronouns have one form when they are used as subjects and another form when they are used as objects.

Subjects are what the sentence is about. (See more about Subject Pronouns)
Objects are what is affected by the action of the subject.
  • I like orange juice. (I is the subject).
  • I read books. (Books is the object as it is receiving the action).

Object pronouns are used instead of nouns, usually because we already know what the object is. It makes the sentenceeasier to read and understand and avoids repetition. We normally use object pronouns after a verb or a preposition.

Examples:


1. We gave them the money. (Les dimos el dinero)
2. He knows me well. (Él me conoce bien)
3. She see them on the bus. (Ella los ve en el bus)
4. He teaches us Math. (Él los ve en el autobús)
5. Whatis the matter with her today? (¿Qué es lo que le pasa hoy?)
6. I explain the lesson to you every day? (Les explico la lección todos los días)

7. We will divide the money between us. (Dividiremos el dinero entre nosotros)
8. She sent me a lot of presents. (Ella me envió muchos regalos)

Possessive adjectives


¿What are possessive adjectives?


Possessive adjectives - my, your, his, her, its, our, your, their - modify the noun following it in order to show possession.

Examples:

  • I'll get my bag.
  • Is this your luggage?

Possessive adjectives are often confused with possessive pronouns.

Examples
  • Your bike is blue. (your is an adjective which modifies bike)
  • Mine is yellow. (mine is a pronoun which functions as the subject of the verb is)

  • Why didn't you clean your room? (your modifiers the noun room)
  • Mary doesn't like her dress. (her modifies the noun dress)

Things to remember:

1. Possessive adjectives are different from possessive pronouns.

  • This is your (possessive adjectives) book and this is mine (possessive pronoun)

  • Its color is beautiful.
  • Their car is in their garage.
